Okay, so I’m a huuuuge cinephile. I usually watch one movie a week, most likely a sci-fi or horror movie. My all-time favorites include Zero Dark Thirty, Red Sparrow, The Witch (and basically anything by A24) Arrival (which I, being a polyglot, imagine would be the only scenario in which I could save the world) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
One thing I am really passionate about is not watching a movie trailer (props to my brother for getting me into this.) I like to take recommendations from people and just go right ahead to watch the movie. Movie trailers sometimes give out too much information and also set the theme of the story. I like to figure these things out for myself and go into the movie completely blind.
I wanted to try out making a one-sentence movie recommendation master post for Slow Boat Library. I might be bad and add an extra sentence or two but, whatever, it’s my post and I can do what I want!!!! lol.
Ex-Machina: How far can man push the boundaries of AI? (It’s even more terrifying when you rewatch it in 2019.)
Prometheus: A space crew out to discover the origin of the universe but they uncover something else instead…
District 9: Ignorant man becomes an alien himself.
Edge of Tomorrow: Imagine reliving the same day over and over and getting to fawn over Emily Blunt’s ripped body as if it were your first time repeatedly.
Arrival: Twelve alien spaceships touch down in different parts of the world and one linguist is set to the task of decoding their language and eventually communicating with them.
Cube: Strangers wake up in a cubed room, finding themselves in a mysterious labyrinth… of DEATH
The Ritual: Group of dudes go on a hike in the mountains of Sweden and ignore every single sign that there is some creepy, Pagan shit going on.
I Saw The Devil: Secret service agent had a fiancee who was brutally murdered by a psychopath and goes on a mission for revenge. Reasons to watch: laxatives, gore, cannibals, torture.
The Endless: Two brothers escaped from a cult two years previous and want to go back for just one more day….or for eternity.
The Witch: Taking place in 1630, a family is expelled from their New England colony for being too religious and find themselves in a terrifying situation. The cinematography and score make it a thousand times scarier.
The Descent: A group of bad-ass chicks go exploring caves to bond and heal after a traumatic life event but they soon realize that they are not alone…
It Follows: An often misunderstood horror movie that comes off as a case of contracting a supernatural and deadly STD but is actually a message about sexual assault.
Train to Busan: Zombies on a train. Need I say more?
The Skin I Live In: Antonio Banderas plays a cosmetic surgeon who gets revenge on some dude for raping his daughter by turning him into a woman.
Children of Men: Takes place in the future where mankind is nearing extinction at the threat of widespread infertility for reasons unknown.
Zero Dark Thirty: CIA badass, recruited out of high school, moves heaven and earth to find Osama bin Laden.
War Dogs: Two best friends from middle school reconnect and then exploit the U.S. military supply trade to sell weapons to foreign countries.
Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind: What if you could erase specific people from your memory? Reason to watch: Jim Carrey’s heartbreaking and totally believable performance.
Room: A girl is kidnapped as a teen, kept in a shed for years, and raises her child (conceived by rape) in the best way she possibly can.
Popstar: A hilarious mockumentary created by The Lonely Island in which Andy Samberg plays a Justin Bieber-type character.
Zoolander: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson play dum-dum super models who accidentally get caught up in an evil man’s assassination attempt on the Malaysian Prime Minister.
Step Brothers: Two grown-ass men still live with their parents, become step brothers, then enemies, then best buds, repeat.
Hopefully some of you guys will take these as inspiration to watch one of these films. If you do, please let me know in the comments below!
