The weather in San Diego has been pretty off and on lately. A few days ago it was 85 degrees and the sun was blinding. Today, clouds hang heavy overhead and rain is falling lightly. I did try to take advantage of the hot weather though. When I woke up on Monday, sweating from the heat, I knew what I had to do. I drove around and did some shopping, buying flowers, loose leaf teas, and a big mason jar. I was preparing to make Sun Tea.
Sun Tea is a drink that you can make at home, with a little help from, you guessed it, the Sun. It’s got a powerful but soft flavor to it and always a beautiful color. Here’s how I make my Sun Tea.
You start with a huge mason jar so that you’ll have a lot of tea and be able to save it or even throw a cute tea party. Fill the mason jar almost to the top, leaving a few inches of space, with cold water. The next step is individual. This is when you add the tea and flowers. I usually add an herbal tea, maybe mixed with a light mint tea, and some clean petals from bright, fragrant flowers. I try to pick the freshest looking flowers; preferably lavender. It’s also fun to add some berries or lemons to the mix.
So far you should have a jug of cold water, and a quarter of an inch to an inch of tea, fruits, and flowers. Seal the jar and give it a shake to mix everything in. After all of this, leave the jar in a place where it will get constant sunlight during the next few days. You can let it sit for 2-3 days, shaking it every now and then. When you decide to take the tea inside, it should be a bold color. Bring the jug to the sink, and strain.
Personally, the tea tastes best when it is served cold or over ice, so I try to stick it in the fridge for a few hours. When the jar is frosted on the outside, I take it out and serve it. Using the power of the sun to make a drink seems to supercharge it and pack it with happiness. I like to think that I can taste then sun 🙂
